After visiting 40 seaside UK towns, travel expert Madeleine Bunting has revealed the popular seaside towns people should avoid during the day.

In her new book, The Seaside: England’s Love Affair, she documented her staycation adventures and warned the one place that surprised her was Padstow, reports The Sun.

In Cornwall, the idyllic town draws visitors from around the UK and beyond and is popular with celebrities like Tom Cruise, Gordon Ramsey and Rick Stein, who has a restaurant there.

However, Ms Bunting said its this new popularity that causes problems for visitors, as it is packed with daytrippers in summer.

She said: “What is happening in Padstow is gross – it’s all the overcrowding.

“When I went, everybody was just milling about, and there were a lot of people sitting on the stone walls not knowing what to do.

“I felt that with some places that become really famous, they’re not the best places to visit because of the over-tourism. During my visit, I spoke to some locals who said they never go into the town during the summer because it’s too busy.”

She advised booking an overnight stay to get away from the busy tourist streets and for another reason.

She added: “The problem is that people aren’t staying for long enough, and they aren’t spending enough money.

“Families go on day trips to the seaside because they’re cheap, but seaside towns need people to stay and spend money.”

Accomondation is available at campsites or at the Old Ship Hotel where double rooms cost around £140 a night.

Time Out UK named it as one of the best places for a staycation in 2023. The team were looking for undiscovered gems, and Padstow came out as one of the best.

Time Out said: “The Cornish town of Padstow has been a haunt for foodies for some time.

“Rick Stein launching his restaurant empire back here in the 1970s was the beginning. Gordon Ramsay buying a massive pad across the water in Rock also helped.

“Now a new generation of chefs is attracting gourmets from across the country. You’ve got The Pig at Harlyn Bay, one of the country-hotel chain’s most recent openings, with its restaurant either growing or sourcing everything from within 25 miles.”You’ve got Prawn on the Lawn and its sophisticated seafood.”
